A skin or wound swab collects material for laboratory analysis. It is used selectively because the result is most helpful when interpreted alongside symptoms, examination and recent antimicrobial treatment.
A skin swab collects material from the surface of an affected area for laboratory analysis. It may help when there is discharge, crusting, a suspected bacterial infection or a wound that is not improving as expected. The result can identify organisms present and, where appropriate, support decisions about antimicrobial treatment.
A swab result is not interpreted in isolation. Some organisms can live harmlessly on the skin, while symptoms may have a non-infectious cause. The clinician therefore considers the appearance, location, duration, medication and general health alongside the laboratory report.
The clinician gently passes a sterile swab over the relevant area. Collection is quick, although an inflamed or open area may feel tender. Unless instructed otherwise, avoid applying a fresh cream immediately before the appointment and bring the names of any antibiotics or topical products recently used.
A swab result may show colonising organisms as well as infection; treatment decisions require clinical interpretation.
