Several conditions can resemble a fungal infection. Mycology testing examines an appropriate sample to help confirm whether fungus is present before a longer or systemic treatment is considered.
Mycology testing looks for fungi that can affect the skin, hair or nails. Because eczema, psoriasis, trauma and bacterial conditions can sometimes resemble fungal infection, laboratory testing may help confirm the cause before prolonged or prescription treatment is considered.
Depending on the concern, the sample may consist of skin scrapings, nail clippings, material from beneath a nail or affected hairs. The most useful material is collected from the active part of the condition, so the clinician will examine the area before taking a sample.
Tell the clinic about antifungal tablets, creams, powders or medicated nail products used recently, because these may affect the sample. Fungal cultures grow slowly and results can take several weeks. A negative test does not always exclude infection; the result must be interpreted alongside the examination and symptoms.
A negative result does not explain every skin or nail change. Further assessment may be needed if symptoms persist.
